Not everything has to have a moral…

Some things are good.

Some things are bad.

And some things are just weird.

(The Good, the Bad and the Ugly came to mind first – but who’d have guessed that there’s actually a film called The Good, The Bad and the Weird? Click on the pic.)

But getting back to the point. Look at this short film. There’s a clam, but there’s no moral message. It’s just weird.

I was braced for something icky at the end.

  1. that is just repulsively bizarre; maybe message is everything in the world has a purpose; notice, it didn’t take a second helping!

  2. Was that sugar, salt or blow ?

  3. That would not encourage me to eat clams.

Only one word comes to mind for me: Yuck!

It’s a pity Hitchcock did not see that clip, just think of the potential blockbuster that the film world missed!

Okay, there is no moral to the story. But what is the story?

Your clam, well not your clam by ownership, is a quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria). I’ve dug and dived for them on the shore of Bae Saint Marie along the French Shore off the Bay Fundy as the tide recedes. Yes I have done the circle of sea salt trick with them. It can takes hours of waiting. And is usual over in a split second. The quahog’s flying tongue scoops the salt with such velocity, the closed clam will spin for 30 seconds to a minute. The quahog in the video was lazy bugger. Many a kitchen party has broken out, as all one needs is beer, a quahog, salt and being bored silly. There has to be a moral in there somewhere.

  8. What the … where’s the pearl?

If you trace the family tree of any famous lead guitarist, you’ll usually find a mixed Quahog-human relationship somewhere in the background. Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Klemm McGuinness – all part clam.
