No good deed goes unpunished…
That sums up my thoughts on the topic of retribution today. But who said it and was it worth saying?
Two candidates for the first part. The late great Oscar Wilde – whose shoulder I pat whenever I pass his statue on Adelaide Street in London. (Other passersby keep him in fresh cigarettes.) And various Americans, including Clare Boothe Luce.
The second part is me.
But was it worth saying? Yes, back then, for the truth of it.
And now? Less so. But repeating it may let me escape retribution from Ramana, Delirious, gaelikaa, Grannymar, Maxi, Padmum, Shackman and The Old Fossil – the other members of the Loose Bloggers Consortium, for failing to post on this week’s set topic. But if you’re disappointed with this meagre offering, I have something exciting coming soon.
In the meantime – girls, music and books.
Whats the worst they could do to you? -or- Whats the worst they could do to you, that you wouldn’t enjoy? Your at your best an spot on your game when off the cuff. Glad your back, more or less..
Hmm – I’ll have to consider that possibly perceptive comment further.
You went missing for quite a while – retribution on us, your loyals?

I was clearly banishing myself in advance.
But in advance of what, you may ask…
I’m sure I have plenty of deeds left unpunished. I wonder if any of the good deeds will balance it all out…..
Hope springs eternal.
May you be blessed with many many more good deeds to your credit.
Amen to that. And the same to you.
I am all for turning the page and moving on to the next new chapter. Seeking retribution scars the the giver and receiver.
That old cliche – this will hurt me more than it hurts you – is sometimes true.
Keepin’ the late, great Oscar Wilde in cigarettes… that was worth the read, HH.

Perhaps we figure that if we keep him occupied he’ll be less likely to get up to mischief.
Cliff’s Notes for a longer thought? 🙂
Never – I refer only to those notes on my cuff, as Hudson noted, or scrawled on my hand. So if I could only make out what this faded ink originally said, the next ppost would be brilliant.
This post is noticeably insubstantial, Paul. You’ll have to be severely punished. Thumbscrews at the very least.
Seriously though, I have no taste for retribution and its overtones of violence and hatred. If I object to someone’s behaviour, I prefer subtler ways of doing something about it.
Ouch and tremble.
Love the Belle & Sebastian song…
“No good deed goes unpunished” gets uttered around here on a regular basis – I always thought it was a bit of old folk wisdom.
Maybe Oscar and the rest of them stole it from their elders.
You’re a sneaky bugger, you are. Acting like quality is a meager offering. Punishment shall be determined forthwith!
I have a punishment for you in the next post – a challenge anyway.
Strange. I always thought it was Clare Booth Luce, not Luce Booth.
Dang! You’re right. I’ve changed it.
Of course I wrote it incorrectly at first just to test you.
No, I didn’t.
Must do better.
Luce Booth; any relation of the Booth Fairy?
Boom tish!
I thank you.

This is probably spam, but with such an interesting script, I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt.
